Bochvelders are hardy chickens that survive the harsh climate conditions in Africa and at the same time can pasture and live off what nature has to offer in nice large camped off areas. By supplementing some of their feed in order to add some nutrients,which they might be missing to enhance growth and boost their egg production, will produce better results in terms of their growing abilities as free range chickens.

The Boschveld hardiness and inbreeding, has led to withstand a variety of poultry illnesses; but even so, it is important to maintain certain inoculations and housekeeping.

The hens are equally as strong  and very fertile, wonderful free range hens with their chicks. Hens produce very healthy offspring and at the same time are truly wonderful chickens to rear.

The Boschveld through interbreeding of various indigenous breeds, their hens produce as many as 240 eggs per year with a fraction of the cost to feed compared to other breeds.

The Boschveld hens start producing eggs from week 26, much smaller as they have just become point of lay. We recommend that you have some affordable and comfortable nests for them to lay in. We use the 25L white plastic bottles cut into half, filled with nice dry grass or wood shavings. It is also very necessary that you build perches with a few tiers high as Boschveld Chickens like to sleep high off the ground.
